There’s nothing quite like seeing the look of pride on a child’s face when they’ve made something special for their mum. And what better occasion than Mother’s Day to let their creativity shine with some fun kids crafts? From glittery cards to hand-painted masterpieces, there are endless ways to help your little Picassos show their love and appreciation. So let’s get crafting, because as we all know, there’s no better gift than one made with love (and a lot of glue)!
How do primary / elementary schools celebrate Mothers Day for those kids without mothers?
It’s a tender subject but it’s important to keep in mind the students who might not have a mother figure in their lives when celebrating Mother’s Day. Here are some suggestions for how you might be mindful and inclusive this time of year while still giving these kids a sense of value and pride:
- Consider extending the celebration to include all carers and significant figures in a child’s life, including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and close family friends.
- Have fun with alternative activities: For students who might not feel comfortable taking part in Mother’s Day-related crafts or celebrations, they could do something else like work on a personal project, play a game or do a printable activity instead.
- Offer support: If you see your student is experiencing some emotional difficulty or feels excluded from Mother’s Day celebrations, give them your support, tenderness and empathy. Let their caregivers know about any support, counselling or grief services they may benefit from.
Schools will make Mother’s Day and similar celebrations more inclusive by considering and being aware of the emotional needs of all children.
What can my kids make for mothers day?
I’m not gonna lie, I’ve sometimes forgotten Mother’s day was coming and asked myself this very question in a bit of a panic. There are so many fun ideas for kids to make for Mother’s Day that I’ve tried and tested in my classroom, we’ll explore some of them here! Handmade cards are a classic choice, and can be as simple or elaborate as your child wants. Another idea is to use your child’s handprint or footprint to create a special art piece. You could also encourage your child to create a personalised coupon book filled with special tasks or activities to do with Mum. For older kids, a DIY photo album or scrapbook is a thoughtful and sentimental gift too. The possibilities are endless, so let your child’s imagination run wild and have fun creating something special for Mum!
