A Halloween hit! These construction paper pumpkins are a simple, but super cute collage craft was one of my favourites to do with young art students and is easy enough for preschool.
This came in handy when I needed short and sweet projects to do in under an hour for after school art club. The teachers and parents loved the look of these, but most importantly the kids did too.
It only requires the simplest of materials, my favourite: paper!
Younger students may need a bit of help cutting shapes, but you can always help them along with a few pre-cut pieces.
I enjoy letting my students make their work from beginning to end wherever possible, it helps with the fine motor skills and development and they end up really proud of their creations.
Try this paper pumpkin craft at home or school just in time for Halloween!
What You’ll Need:
- A4 Black Paper
- Coloured Paper – Green, Orange, White
- Glue Sticks
- Scissors
- Pencils
- Monster Maker Drawing Activity
What To Do:
1. Cut the grass
Using a strip of green paper, cut tiny slits or triangles along the top edge to create the effect of grass, and glue the strip horizontally along the bottom of the black paper.
Tip! To save time with this part, I pre-cut the green paper strips before handing them out to be cut as grass.
2. Cut the pumpkin shape and green leaf
You’ll need Black, Green, and Orange paper for this part. Cut out a rounded shape for the orange pumpkin, cut a green leaf shape for the…well leaf and stem part, and glue them down on black paper for a nice spooky night time contrast.
3. Cut the eyes, mouth and scary teeth
Cut out a big mouth and a pair of triangle eyes from the black paper. Cut little white rectangles or triangles to create the teeth, arrange these pieces into a face and stick them onto the orange pumpkin.
4. Add extra details
We used a pencil to create the pumpkin lines and some kids drew spiders and creepy stuff in the black background. Some kids even used the white paper to create stars and a moon, I just love their creativity!
5. Try this Roll-a-Monster activity for more after project fun!
Once the construction paper pumpkin collage is complete, keep the halloween fun going with this fun monster maker drawing activity that kids can do together or independently. Simply roll a dice and draw the corresponding facial feature to create a silly monster!
